David Frank’s artwork Ngura is the feature artwork on this blog and will be exhibited at RIGHTNOW at Boomalli gallery in Leichhardt (April 9-27).
Artist David Frank began painting at Iwantja Arts after a long career working as a policeman within the APY Lands – Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara – in the remote north west of South Australia.
The Iwantja Community is mainly Yankunytjatjara people living on the eastern side of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands, 8 km from the Stuart Highway in the far north of South Australia, on a dusty rocky ridge called Indulkana.
The memories and stories of his time working with the police force are often depicted in his paintings, producing works which portray strong narratives of country side and the journeys into and across the vast country. As a young man, David was taught the skills of the Nangkari (traditional healer) by his father. This is a practice he continues, providing physical and psychological assistance to the local community.
